What to Put Into Your Family Newsletter

By Shannon Buck - Copyright September 2006

When Skye and Zowie were young our newsletters had different content than they do now. I did the entire newsletter myself each month. Now we do one four times a year.

When they were younger, our newsletters consisted of information about them, as well as information about our family. I had a letter from me on the first page, describing what our family was doing. I added reports and book reviews that the girls had done, recipes, games, jokes, riddles, science experiments, a poem from my nephew, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays,

pictures, and anything else we could come up with.

Now that Skye and Zowie are older, and we are doing our newsletter online, we each have our own page. The pages in our newsletter are titled Home, Skye's Room, Zowie's Room, Mom's Room, In Our Home, Our School Room, and Memorial. The girls do their own pages, and I do the rest.

Your first step is to come up with a name. The Name of our current newsletter is The Buck-Hayes Family Newsletter. Come up with one that reflects what you want your newsletter to be about. How about one of these:

Smiths' Gazette

The Chronicles of the Jones Family

Little Apartment in the City

Try to come up with catchy names for each section of your newsletter. You will need to consider what you will want to put into your newsletter before taking this step. How about some of these:

Letter from the Editor, At Our Home, What We Are Up To: A letter from you.

The Lab, Try This!: Science Experiments for others to try.

Happenings, What is Happening Here, What is Going On: Birthdays, Anniversaries (and more) of all the people who are important to you, as well as the events/holidays that are important to you.

Good Eats, Yum Yums, A New Recipe to Try, Kitchen Tips: Recipes and tips.

Creations, Crafts, Things to Make: Craft ideas for others.

Articles, Information: Articles/reports about what is important to your family. How you feel about the events of the world.

There is a lot that you can do with your newsletter. Let your imagination soar. When you have finished your newsletter e-mail me the link at thehsmomof2@aol.com and ask me to feature it on the teen page on the homeschool website. I will be happy to do so.
